Modern and cosmopolitan, Abu Dhabi is one of the best destinations for discerning travelers and an exceptional home for residents. There’s plenty to see and do in the UAE’s capital city, especially for families. One of the must-see attractions for all generations is Qasr Al Watan.
What Is Qasr Al Watan Famous For?
Qasr Al Watan is widely known for its remarkable architecture and stunning features. But it is also recognized as a symbol of Emirati culture, and does it so well that it has been hailed as the World’s Leading Cultural Tourist Attraction in 2024 from the World Travel Awards. Abu Dhabi’s cultural landmark (also called Palace of the Nation) beat out the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Sagrada Familia in Spain; Murano, Burano and Torcello in Italy, and the Vatican Museum.
The Palace of the Nation also won as the Middle East’s Leading Cultural Tourist Attraction 2024 from the same award-giving body.
Because Qasr Al Watan is such a shining symbol of culture, knowledge, and inspiring journeys, schools often take students to visit it. The Palace does have a school program that combines culture and education, making it the perfect place to take your kids for a day of exploring the city.
Exploring Qasr Al Watan With Your Kids
The grandeur and beauty of Qasr Al Watan mesmerizes adults, but the magnificent structure also enchants children. Covering over 380,000 square meters (the Palace is 4.9 times the size of the UK’s Buckingham Palace, which is 77,000 square meters), Qasr Al Watan can be a wonderland for kids.
They’ll marvel at the geometric patterns and the calligraphy that adorn the white marble. They’ll gaze at the solid maple wood doors, which feature hand-carved designs in 23-carat gold and intricate patterns. The Palace of the Nation has over 1 million square meters of elaborate stonework and 22,000 cubic meters of decorative elements. Every corner is a visual representation of Arabian artistry and craftsmanship.
Of course, you and your family will enjoy more than the architecture and design of the Palace.
Here is a practical guide to help you navigate the palace with your children.
Try the audio-guided tour.
Qasr Al Watan’s audio-guided tour is a comprehensive exploration of this cultural landmark. You’ll have a maximum of two hours with the audio device as you walk through the halls and zones.
This tour is a separate fee from your entry ticket. It comes in multiple languages: Arabic, English, German, Mandarin, and Russian.
The audio-guided tour is best for your older kids since children under five years old are not able to use the audio device.
Alternatively, your family can opt for a guided tour instead. It’s a 30-minute walkthrough and learning of the exhibitions, the halls, and UAE’s rich history.
Download the map for a contactless experience.
If your family prefers to explore Qasr Al Watan independently, download the map. With it, you’ll easily make your way to the exhibitions, the zones, gift shop, and the dining area.
Watch a skilled falconer.
When you want a break from the opulence and the grandeur, head outside for one of the UAE’s oldest, much-beloved traditions: falconry.
Qasr Al Watan presents a Falcon Experience where you and your family can get up close to the powerful, noble, and beautiful animal with their skilled falconer.
Ask the falconer about the animal’s habits and characteristics. Learn new things about what the majestic falcon can do, and more importantly, about the tradition of falconry.
Well-trained falcons have been essential in the day-to-day survival of the Bedouin tribe. These animals hunted for food in the old days. But as falconry became a national pastime in the UAE, the animal’s status has since been elevated.
The Falcon Experience is scheduled Sundays, Tuesday, and Thursdays, between 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Stay for the Palace in Motion.
While you’re outside, prepare for the Palace in Motion. It’s a light and sound show unlike any other. The kids will be spellbound by the projection of colorful lights on the white granite and limestone facade of the Palace. Everyone will learn from the three captivating acts that unfold on the front of the building.
The spectacular show starts at 7:30 p.m., but that may change depending on sunset. If you want to end your visit to Qasr Al Watan, schedule it on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.
Plan Your Visit
Before you drive out to Qasr Al Watan, ensure an enriching and enjoyable experience for everyone by following a plan.
Schedule your visit during low-season.
Since this is a popular landmark and a must-see attraction, expect crowds on weekends and peak season. If it’s at all possible, try visiting on a weekday morning when there are fewer guests.
Book your tickets online.
Avoid the lines and get your tickets on Qasr Al Watan’s website. You’ll save time and ensure your entry if you happen to go during peak season.
Take breaks.
The palace is massive, so you’ll want to take breaks. You can sit in the gardens and courtyards, or head to Diyafa for a wonderful meal.
Make sure everyone’s wearing a comfortable outfit.
Because it is grand and there’s a lot of ground to cover during your visit, you’ll want to be comfortable throughout the tour. Wear comfortable shoes and dress modestly.
Qasr Al Watan, or Palace of the Nation, is an iconic landmark. With its magnificent architecture and design, and enriching experiences, it is a must-visit cultural destination for all families.
