In Denver’s pivotal 17-10 victory against Washington, standout safety Justin Simmons demonstrated his star status when it counted most.
As Ed Donatell’s defense powered Denver to its first win in five weeks, the Broncos’ one-time All-Pro hauled in two interceptions. The AFC West squad beat the Football Team in a close game, thanks in part to Simmons’ strong effort.
With 49 seconds left, the former Boston College player made perhaps the game-winning play, intercepting a Taylor Heinicke ball intended for Terry McLaurin in the end zone.

Taking Care of the Offense’s Blushes
Despite Denver’s best efforts to throw the game away, Simmons’ squad was able to hold on due to excellent secondary play and a ferocious pass rush. After the offense lost a late fumble, requiring the defense to make one more stop, there was neither rage or self-pity, despite the explanation.
After the game, Simmons told reporters, “Obviously you anticipate the game to be done, but things happens.” “How are you going to handle it? “Are we meant to be out here?” go out there and say. You’re putting yourself in a position to fail. That’s the sort of thing I felt as a defense, and I was very happy of how we handled the bell. When the guys returned to the field, there were no long faces.
“You were obviously sad because you had to, but there were no lengthy looks or thoughts that we couldn’t do it.” But fine, if you want to go win the football game, we’ll pay for it. Go out there and win it as the defense. And I was quite proud of our team. Our rush performed a fantastic job. I think our coverage was good; there were a few hiccups, but we’ll fix them.”
Front Seven, according to Simmons.
Simmons was effusive in his appreciation for Denver’s front seven, which was without Von Miller and Bradley Chubb, the organization’s two franchise faces. Dre’Mont Jones and Malik Reed took their spots, combining for 3.5 sacks, as you’d expect from a more seasoned combo. Washington’s job appeared undoubtedly impossible after Reed’s sack in the waning seconds of the game.
“First and foremost, I believe our front seven did a fantastic job today,” Simmons said. “Obviously in the rushing game, such as sacks, but also in the run defense, as well as some spillovers.” I felt our linebackers performed well as well. [ILB] Kenny [Young] and [ILB] Baron [Browning] are both getting in there.
“There were a couple things that weren’t great in terms of communication, but I just wanted to make sure I got up here, and I’m sure there’ll be a question about it, but give them the credit they deserve because I think they played a heck of a game today,” she said.
After the victory, Simmons isn’t getting ahead of himself. There are no grandiose declarations or analogies to legendary figures from the past. Rather, there’s a sense of urgency, a burning desire to take this winning attitude into Dallas and beyond.
Simmons stated, “By no means was it ideal.” “They had some excellent drives down the field.” When it came down to it, [DE] Shelby [Harris] and ‘Dre’ (DE Dre’Mont Jones) had two huge field goal blocks, that clearly helped us. There was a lot of excellent things there, and that’s the kind of thing we’ll have to continue to improve on.”
Make no mistake: Denver’s season is still very much alive at 4-4.
