After leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 4-0 series lead against the Los Angeles Lakers, Dennis Schroder was lauded as one of the most clutch players in the NBA. However, after losing Game 5 by 30 points, he has been cast aside by media narratives that paint him as an overrated player who doesn’t deserve his success.

Topic: Dennis Schroder shafted by media narrative in embarrassing Lakers exit Category: General Must Have: lakers 2021 The Dennis Schroder shafted by media narrative in embarrassing Lakers exit is an article about Dennis Schroder being unfairly portrayed by the media after the Atlanta Hawks lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.
It’s likely that every NBA fan has heard it by now. In March, Dennis Schroder rejected down a $84 million offer from the Los Angeles Lakers in favor of a higher salary. Given how badly he performed during LA’s short playoff run, the storyline for the whole summer has been that he won’t be able to reach that number.
Dennis Schroder has got a free agent contract after seeing virtually every other star point guard find a home in free agency – and it’s even worse than you could have imagined. Schroder agreed to a $5.9 million deal with the Boston Celtics. On Instagram, he announced the deal.

Dennis Schroder’s unsuccessful free agency gambit was reported by almost every NBA news source. Even renowned NBA veterans painted him as a selfish character who is getting what he deserves, according to talk show hosts. But has the media’s portrayal of him distorted his worth to an unacceptably high degree?
Dennis Schroder isn’t worth $5.9 million. As a point guard, he has averaged 14.3 points per game while shooting 44 percent from the floor. He has almost five assists per game on average and has started nearly half of his 500-game career. Schroder, who finished second in the Sixth Man of the Year award only two seasons ago, can fill in well as a starter or be an incredibly explosive scorer off the bench.
Dennis Schroder was said to be worth $84 million. Most likely not. However, the fact that the Lakers gave him so much indicates that he was regarded as a high-end talent in this league. That’s why they traded for him in the first place, to replace Rajon Rondo.
Dennis Schroder did, in fact, underperform throughout the NBA playoffs. However, one poor playoff series shouldn’t have drained his worth as much as it did. In the Lakers’ first-round defeat to the Phoenix Suns, he averaged 14.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. His shooting percentages were far below his season average, with just 40% from the field and 30.8 percent from beyond the arc.
However, he has been unfairly penalized by the free agency market as a result of his six poor performances. Look at the other deals signed by similar caliber players to see how Dennis Schroder is being treated unfairly simply because his rejection of the Lakers has been widely publicized.
For the Boston Celtics, Evan Fournier had almost identical postseason numbers to Schroder. However, the Frenchman signed a four-year, $78 million contract with the New York Knicks. Doug McDermott has established himself as a capable scorer off the bench, a position in which Schroder thrives. The San Antonio Spurs scooped him up for three years and $42 million. They even handed Zach Collins, who only played 11 games last season, a three-year deal for $22 million.
The Dallas Mavericks, who have been in dire need of playmaking with Luka Doncic, allegedly did not want to pursue Dennis Schroder because he would not provide them any major value. Reggie Bullock, a good but limited stationary shooter, was signed for three years and $30.5 million.
Dennis Schroder isn’t an All-Star. But for him to be unable to get a decent contract as he approaches his peak years is ridiculous. Yes, he erred by passing up the guaranteed funds. That is why betting on oneself is so dangerous.
What is certain is that the story around him tainted his worth much more than he deserved. Now it’s up to him to show himself worthy of a deal next summer.
