The Kansas City Chiefs offense is reportedly in grave danger of losing their indispensable mastermind Patrick Mahomes. It’s a situation that could have major implications for the rest of the NFL and, more importantly, for the team’s chances at winning another Super Bowl.

Since 2018, the Kansas City Chiefs’ high-powered offense, led by Patrick Mahomes, has been the league’s most feared unit. The Chiefs have an exceptional quarterback and a slew of outside weapons capable of scoring from any spot on the field, and they’ve been the stuff of many coaches’ nightmares in recent seasons.
Despite the fact that Mahomes receives the most of the credit for Kansas City’s deadly offense, none of it would be possible without the brain behind it all, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. However, the Chiefs are allegedly in serious risk of losing Bieniemy to the newly vacant head coaching position at USC after only one week of the 2021 NFL season.

When Bieniemy was still the Chiefs’ running backs coach in 2017, and Mahomes hadn’t yet earned the starting position, the Chiefs finished sixth in the NFL in scoring, averaging 25.6 points per game. Andy Reid’s team reached the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons, but fell short of the AFC Championship Game once again.
Everything changed a year later.
Bieniemy came over as offensive coordinator in 2018, just after Mahomes was anointed the starting quarterback, and the two hit it off right away. Kansas City had the highest-scoring offense in the NFL this season, averaging 34.8 points per game, and reached the conference championship game for the first time since 1993.
Bieniemy has guided the Chiefs to a top-six attack in both points scored and yards gained in each of his three seasons as offensive coordinator. Oh, and Kansas City’s powerful offense also carried the team to a Super Bowl victory. Sure, Mahomes gets a lot of credit for it, but he wouldn’t have had the same amount of success without a savvy offensive coordinator who knows how to open up the field and make things easier for his rookie quarterback.
But don’t take my word for it. Just ask Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes essentially urged NFL clubs with head coaching openings to hire Bieniemy last summer.
Mahomes told 610 Kansas City’s “The Drive” that he believes he will be hired. “His track record is self-evident. He brings to us the kind of guy he is, the way he can manage and lead the locker room, and the way he teaches and plans. People will think he’s insane if he doesn’t.”
He wasn’t, to be sure. Yes, they were insane.
According to reports, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are in serious risk of losing Bieniemy.
According to league sources, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will be considered for the head coaching job at USC. Bieniemy is from Southern California, and he has previously informed confidants that USC is one of the few collegiate positions that he may be interested in.

Another NFL offseason has passed, and Bieniemy has been appointed as a head coach for the first time. For years, his players and other coaches have lauded his ability to take charge of his own club, therefore it’s a wonder why the renowned OC is still on the bench in Kansas City.
According to a new study that should frighten Chiefs supporters, this may not be the case for long. Bieniemy has surfaced as a contender for the recently vacated USC head coaching position, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. After a humiliating defeat to Stanford, the school unexpectedly dismissed Clay Helton this week.
Bieniemy is from Southern California, according to Schefter, and he has previously indicated that a collegiate position at USC would be appealing to him.
Should Bieniemy leave Kansas City for USC?
Bieniemy may have to make a difficult choice. He’s just in his fourth season as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, and he must be frustrated by the paucity of head coaching opportunities. It’s past time for him to show his detractors what he can accomplish as an offensive genius who has been coaching for two decades but has never been handed his own club.
Bieniemy may also earn more money as the head coach of a top collegiate school such as USC. Plus, a good showing as head coach of the Trojans will convince NFL front offices that he’s the real deal, and head coaching offers will start pouring in.
Bieniemy may have the greatest offensive coordinator position in the NFL, but he deserves to be a head coach soon.
