What to Check Before Buying a Used Car

The used car hunt usually starts with a photo that looks better than the car does. Clean wheel arches, a shiny dashboard, a price that feels like a win. Then you are standing in a driveway on a Saturday morning with a stranger telling you the previous owner was a nurse who only drove it to work, and you have about twenty minutes to decide whether that is true.

Buying used is still the smart move for most families, because somebody else already absorbed the steepest part of the depreciation. The risk is that you also inherit whatever they neglected. The difference between a bargain and a money pit is almost never visible in the listing, and it is rarely about the badge on the hood either.

So slow the process down. A used car deserves an hour of boring checks before it deserves your signature, and the checks below are ordered roughly the way an unhurried buyer would work through them.

Start With the Paperwork, Not the Paint

Ask for the vehicle identification number before you drive anywhere, and buy your own history report rather than reading the seller’s printout. The Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council advises buyers to compare that report against what the seller told you, and to stop the moment the two versions disagree. Ontario has no cooling off period once a purchase agreement is signed, which makes the hour before you sign the only hour that counts.

Check that the VIN on the dash matches the VIN on the door jamb and on every document. That sounds paranoid until you read what the theft investigators are seeing: stolen vehicles are increasingly re-VINed and resold rather than stripped, and Équité Association recorded more than 20,000 thefts in the first half of 2026 alone. A private sale with a vague story and a rushed timeline is worth walking away from.

Read the Body and the Interior Honestly

Walk the car in daylight. Uneven panel gaps, paint that does not quite match from one fender to the next, and fresh undercoating in a ten year old wheel well all suggest repairs somebody would rather you did not ask about. Get low and look at the rockers and the subframe, because rust in Ontario is a structural question, not a cosmetic one.

Inside, trust your nose first. Damp carpet, a musty smell or a mismatched set of floor mats can point to a leak or a flood history, and a heavy air freshener is usually hiding something rather than fixing it. Surface grime is different, since stains and smells are often fixable with proper detailing and make a decent negotiating point. Worn pedals and a polished steering wheel on a low mileage car are the mismatch to worry about.

Mileage Matters Less Than Maintenance

Buyers fixate on the odometer, and it is the wrong number to fixate on. A highway commuter with 180,000 kilometres and a folder of service receipts is usually a better bet than a 90,000 kilometre car that sat in a driveway for three winters and never had its fluids touched. Ask for the records, and ask who did the work.

Then pay a mechanic you chose to inspect it. A pre purchase inspection runs about a hundred and fifty dollars and is the cheapest insurance in the whole transaction, since it catches the worn suspension, the leaking seal and the timing service that comes due next spring. If a seller refuses, that refusal is your answer.

Budget for the Whole Cost of Ownership

The purchase price is the smallest decision you are making. Fuel, tires, brakes, licensing and insurance all follow the car you pick, and the gap between two similar models over five years can be larger than the gap in their sticker prices. The models that top the theft charts, the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V among them, can also cost more to insure in some postal codes.

Get a quote before you buy, not after. Fifteen minutes comparing Auto insurance services in Ajax against the two or three cars on your shortlist will tell you more about the real monthly cost than any payment calculator, and it occasionally rules out a vehicle entirely. Factor in winter tires if the car does not come with a set, plus the safety standards certificate and the transfer fees that land the week you take it home.

Let the Test Drive Decide

Drive it cold if you can, because a warm engine hides the rattles and the hard starts. Take it past fifty on a real road, brake firmly once in an empty stretch, and turn the radio off so you can hear the wheel bearings and the exhaust. Try every switch, including the ones you never use.

Then bring the family into it. Car seats go in and out of different back seats very differently, the stroller either fits in that trunk or it does not, and the sliding door you thought was a luxury turns out to matter on a rainy school run. A car that works on paper and annoys you daily is still the wrong car.

None of this takes expertise. It takes a willingness to be the slightly annoying buyer who asks for the records, brings a flashlight and books the inspection, which is exactly the buyer that sellers with something to hide stop returning calls to.

The payoff is quiet. You get a car you understand, a maintenance schedule you can plan around, and a monthly cost that holds steady instead of ambushing you in February. That is worth losing a weekend over.

And if the car does not check out, walk. There is always another listing next week, and the one you skipped was somebody else’s repair bill.
